Alfreda Markowska

Alfreda Markowska (* 1926 in Galicia ) is a Roma, which was awarded for saving of about 50 Jewish and Roma youth from extermination by the Nazis.

Life

Alfreda Markowska was born in Galicia in a traveling Roma camp. 1939 migrated their group of Roma to the west and got into the area that was occupied in accordance with the German -Soviet non-aggression pact after the invasion of Poland by the Germans. Markowskas family was found by German units and their extended family and almost completely exterminated. They even went into labor camps, such as Stalowa Wola, where she married. From Stalowa Wola it was eventually moved to a camp near Lublin, where they escaped with a comprehensive group of about 50 people minor Jews and Roma. In the woods she became the oldest Roma the lead the whole group.

After the end of the Second World War, the group split. The Roma settled in the former German territories, Alfreda Markowska finally settled down in Gorzów Wielkopolski. She lived at times from acting as a fortune teller. She was awarded by Lech Kaczyński with the Order of Polonia Restituta, she was the subject of a short film.
