Algernon Keith-Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore

Algernon Hawkins Thomond Keith - Falconer, 9th Earl of Kintore, GCMG, PC, ( born August 12, 1852 in Edinburgh, Scotland, † March 3, 1930 in London, England ) was a British politician and Governor of South Australia.

Life

Keith - Falconer was born as the first son of Francis Alexander, 8th Earl of Kintore, and his wife Louisa Madaleine. He studied at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge and obtained his Master's degree in 1877. 1873 he married Sydney Charlotte Montagu, the daughter of George Montagu, 6th Duke of Manchester. They had two sons and two daughters.

From 1880, when he inherited the title of his father at his death, he was a member of the House of Lords. In 1885 he was appointed Chief Whip of the Conservatives in the House of Lords. In 1889 he was appointed Governor of South Australia.

Keith - Falconer traveled extensively through Australia, far more than its predecessors. In 1891 he crossed the continent from Darwin to Adelaide. His tenure was marked by economic problems and several strikes, including a strike of miners in Broken Hill in 1892. As a Freemason he was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of South Australia.

1895 resigned Keith - Falconer. Here he was Lord -in- Waiting at the court of Queen Victoria and Edward VII, then in whose behalf he was in diplomatic missions in Europe go. Keith - Falconer died on 3 March 1930 in London. The titles were inherited by his second son Arthur, as the first-born had already predeceased.
