Ali Hassan Mwinyi

Ali Hassan Mwinyi ( born May 8, 1925 in Kivure, Pwani ) was from 1985 to 1995 President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Previously he was Interior Minister and Vice President of the country.

While Mwinyis reign Tanzania took the first steps to revise the socialist policies of Julius Nyerere. He loosened import regulations and encouraged private companies. During his second term, a multi-party system was introduced by the pressure of foreign sponsors. Since the end of his term Mwinyi lives in Dar es Salaam.

Although Mwinyis policy of a free market economy had success, he is widely known for the high level of corruption and widespread tax evasion, which is one of his tenure has developed criticized. Critics also claim that there was no reasonable and disciplined monetary policy during the reign Mwinyis.
