Alice Rivlin

Alice Mitchell Rivlin ( born March 4, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American business manager, who was also director of the Office of Management and Budget ( OMB ).

Life

Rivlin first studied economics at Bryn Mawr College and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics) from. A subsequent post-graduate studies in economics at Radcliffe College, she finished in 1955 with a Master of Arts (MA Economics). Finally, she acquired in 1958 at Radcliffe College a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D. Economics) and was then first as an economist and political analyst at the Brookings Institution operates.

In 1966 she entered the service of President Johnson and was until 1968, Deputy Assistant to the health PRIME, education and welfare Minister for Programme Coordination ( Deputy Assistant U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare ), then there till 1969 Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, and thus a close associate of then-Prime Minister John W. Gardner and Wilbur J. Cohen. She then returned as a research scientist back to the Brookings Institution.

In 1975 their appeal to the first director of the newly created Budget Office ( Congressional Budget Office ) of the Congress of the United States and held that post until 1983. In 1983 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Later in 1986 she was the first woman president of the American Economic Association ( AEA).

After a year as a Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1993 to 1994, she was on 17 October 1994 by U.S. President Bill Clinton became the successor Leon Panetta, Chief of Staff of the White House as Director of the Office of management and Budget called. She was not only a member of the Cabinet Clinton, but also the first and so far only female head of this Executive Office of the U.S. President.

On 13 September 1996 it was followed by Franklin Raines as Director of the OMB. She herself was then vice chairman of the Federal Reserve System and has held this office until 16 July 1999.
