Alister Hardy

Sir Alister Clavering Hardy ( born February 10, 1896 in Nottingham, † 22 or 24th May 1985 in Oxford ) was a British marine biologist. He was known for marine biological publications and the water monkey hypothesis.

Life

Hardy is a graduate of the elite boarding school in Oundle and enrolled in the fall of 1914 at Exeter College, Oxford for a degree in biology.

During the First World War, he was drafted into the army, most of the time he was employed in the north of the country in homeland security. In 1919 he was able to continue his studies at Oxford. Hardy was a student of Julian Huxley for some time. Through him, Hardy got a job as an assistant at the Fisheries Laboratory, Lowestoft. There he was able to explore the life of the Atlantic herring and its dependence on zooplankton.

For some time, Hardy went to the oceanographic institute of the University of Naples. Just returned to the UK he was appointed in 1925 as chief zoologist of Discovery Oceanographic Expedition. By 1927, Hardy helped here to explore the relationships between plankton and whales. After his return, Hardy took in 1928 to a call from the University Kingston- upon- Hull. There he worked until 1942 as a professor of zoology. This year, Hardy went to the University of Aberdeen, where he worked until 1946. Subsequently, he took a call of his colleges at Oxford and remained there until his retirement in 1962.

From 1965 to 1969, Hardy President of the Society for Psychical Research.

During the time in Kingston -upon -Hull was 1930 - when reading Man's Place amongst the Mammals of Wood Jones - Hardy Water Ape Hypothesis. However, he published until 1960 in his article " What is more aquatic in history" in the magazine " New Scientist ". At first it was little noticed. The Royal Society took Hardy in 1940 as a full member. Queen Elizabeth II struck him in 1957 his services to science because of a knight.
