Alkemade
Alkemade ( listen? / I ) is a former municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. Since January 1, 2009 Alkemade heard together with Jacobswoude the new municipality of Kaag en Braassem.

The municipality included the villages of Kaag (which is on an island in the " Kagerplassen " Lage52.2127777777784.5580555555556 ), Nieuwe Wetering ( Lage52.2054.6152777777778 ), Oud Ade ( Lage52.1905555555564.5661111111111 ), Oude Wetering ( Lage52.2154.6436111111111 ) Rijpwetering ( Lage52.1897222222224.5852777777778 ) and the main town Roelofarendsveen ( Lage52.2033333333334.6330555555556 ). The places are on average 3 meters below sea level.

The villages are situated northeast of Leiden on the A 4 ( European route E 19 ) the direction of Amsterdam.
Industry
The most important economic sectors are: water sports tourism, cultivation of flowers and vegetables in greenhouses and agriculture.

History; famous residents
The Villages have been built next to water ( Weteringen The Weteringen ) in peat bog in the 14th century. Former Tour de France winner Joop Zoetemelk was born in Rijpwetering.
