This first meeting held on 20 April 1963 in Kampala (Uganda) under the slogan: "Freedom and unity in Christ." Delegates themed post-colonial situation in Africa and criticized the nationalist spirit which then pervaded many African countries. They called on to overcome the divisions of the continent and " participate wholeheartedly in the development of the African nation ." In the period following the AACC supported national and regional churches in taking part in the process of decolonization and economic structure of their countries. She played a significant role in the removal of the South African apartheid regime. Nowadays in the AACC are issues such as poverty reduction / social justice, the fight against the HIV / AIDS pandemic and international relations from the viewpoints of economics, ethics and morality in the foreground. The goal here is to integrate the regional churches into a coherent international network.

Since its inception, the AACC has met in various African cities. 2003, under the motto " Come Let Us Rebuild" ( Come, let us rebuild ) in Yaoundé ( Cameroon) after disappointing decades inside Africa discord, war and corruption the motto of Kampala was revived.
