Allders

Allders the third largest department store in the UK was based in Croydon, United Kingdom, founded by Joshua Allder in 1862. Up to the first bankruptcy in 2005 Allders ran a full-line department store chain with 50 stores.

History

The existing until September 2012 department store in Croydon was a founding branch, and the future flagship store (main store). The Allders department store group, which had grown over many years by its own expansion and acquiring other department stores, operating 50 stores throughout the UK, the majority of them. Than traditional department stores in the shopping streets of the inner cities, but also a number of stores in shopping centers in suburbs

Allders was the fourth largest of the British department store chains. The Allders department store group went bankrupt in 2005 and was disbanded in the sequence and sold piecemeal.

In the course of the bankruptcy proceedings, 35 the Allders department stores were taken over by rival companies such as Debenhams, Primark, British Home Stores ( BHS ), and House of Fraser and operated. The remaining houses, which was unable to sell, began in February 2005 with clearance sales and have until May of the same year closed, including the large store in London's Oxford Street, which was however also later acquired by Primark. By May 2005, were - with the exception of Croydon - all Allders houses closed or taken over, with the branch in Leeds was closed last.

The main house in Croydon was acquired by Harold Tillman, owner of Jaeger- clothing shops, and continued to be operated until its closure on 22 September 2012, under the name of Allders. It was measured by sales area ( 46,000 m²), the third largest department store in the UK (after Harrods and Selfridges ), and possessed many years the largest carpet department in Europe. From 15 June 2012, the company was operating under bankruptcy protection under UK bankruptcy procedures. As a result, a total liquidation sale was held. The receivers failed to find a new investor for the historic but outdated department store and it was September 22, 2012 closed with the loss of approximately 1000 jobs.
