Allegany Indian Reservation

The Allegany Reservation is an Indian reservation of the Seneca Indians in Cattaraugus County, New York.

Geography

The reserve covers 113.1 km ². Of these, 94.2 km ² of land and 18.8 km ² water.

Demographic data

According to U.S. census living in 2000 1099 people in the reserve, spread over 410 households and 280 families. This gives a population density of 11.7 persons per km ². The residents of the Reservation are made up 42.13 % White, 0.82% Black, 53.78 % Native American, 0.45 % Asian, 0.18 % from other races, and 2.64% half-breeds together. 2.00% are Hispanic or Latino.

In 30.7 % of the 410 households living children under 18 years. 40.7 % of households consist of married couples, 18.0 % a woman living without spouse, and 31.7 % are non-families. 24.1% are made up of individuals and 9.5% a person living alone who is 65 years or older. On average, a household consists of 2.63 persons; the average family size is 3.08.

29.9 % are under the age of 18, 7.7 % from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% between 45 and 64 and 13.7 % 65 or older. The average age is 34 years. For every 100 females are 103.1 males; 100 women under 18 years 94.9 males.

A household takes an average of $ 28,971 per year, a family $ 30,250. Men earn an average of $ 23,958, women $ 20,982. The average per capita income is $ 12,681. 22.6 % of the population, respectively. 17.0 % of families are below the poverty line. 24.7 % of persons living below the poverty line, are under 18 years old, 22.3 % are over 65
