Alligator-class landing ship
The Alligator class, project 1171 tapir (Russian: Тапир; transcription: Tapir ) is a class of landing ships of the Soviet Union and now its successor states.
History
End of the 1950s, the call for a new landing ship was loud in the Soviet Navy. The Navy of the Soviet Union was at that time in the course of the Cold War in an upgrade phase, and it was realized that if you wanted to keep up with the West step, a new landing ship had to be developed. This was also required to be of Soviet military doctrine justice, which called for the provision of military aid must be guaranteed to all the Allied and the Soviet Union -friendly minded states. So the project was launched in 1959 1171. Just seven years later, in 1966, the first ship of the class was put into service.
Task
The ships of the Alligator class were designed for large landing operations and also for civilian operations. The load capacity is up to 1750 tons. In the cargo area can accommodate up to 13 heavy tanks or 36 armored personnel carriers ( BTR) space. In addition, 440 soldiers can be transported further. In landing operations directly on the beach, however, the load capacity decreases to 600 tons.

Preparedness
At present, in the Russian Navy, two units of the class in active service. Up to three ships of the class will still be in reserve. One unit was sold in 1996 to Ukraine, on the exact condition, however, not much is known. Some of the ships were involved in August 2008 landing operations in Georgia.
