Almendra (Salamanca)

Template: Infobox church in Spain / Maintenance / Province Almendra is a North Spanish municipality ( municipio ) in the province of Salamanca in the autonomous community of Castile -Leon.

Location

Almendra is in the northwest of the province of Salamanca, at an altitude of about 760 meters above sea level. inst in the rocky landscape of the Natural Park Arribes del Duero near the Almendra Dam, which impounds the River Tormes. The provincial capital Salamanca is about 72 km ( driving distance ) away in a southeasterly direction.

Demographics

In 1900, the city had nearly 650 residents. As a result of the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture, the population has since declined to the current low. The jump in the late 1960s and early 1970s is due to the temporary influx of workers and engineers in the construction of the dam.

Economy

Agriculture has traditionally played the largest role in the economy of the community. Revenue from tourism in the form of the rental of apartments ( casas rurales ) have been added in recent decades.

History

Some minor archaeological finds from the area indicate the presence of the Celtic tribe of Vettones and subsequent Romans.

Attractions

  • The small parish church of the town has a bell gable ( espadaña ) in the west and an open south porch ( portico ).
  • The main attraction in the area of the village is located on the border between the provinces of Salamanca and Zamora dam of about eight kilometers north of the village located Almendra Dam, which was built in the Franco period and completed in 1970. The dam is 202 meters high and 567 meters long. The dam has a maximum capacity of 2650 million cubic meters, making it one of the largest in Europe.
  • Also impressive is the nearby quarry, from which comes the stone material for the built in place concrete mixing plant.
