Alofi

Alofi is the capital of the Pacific state of Niue. Alofi has 581 inhabitants and consists of the two administrative units ( villages ) Alofi North (147 inhabitants) and Alofi South, where the government buildings are located (434 inhabitants).

Alofi is located on the west coast of Niue in the center of Alofi Bay. Before Alofi is the only gap in the coral reef that surrounds the island.

On 6 January 2004, the cyclone Heta swept over the island and destroyed numerous buildings of the town, including the hospital; 200 of the 1500 island residents were left homeless, and one died. After the storm, the administration buildings on the island were moved to a less exposed location in the interior of the island. This place is called Fonuakula and belongs to the administrative unit Alofi South.

Traffic

The private Niue International Airport ( IATA: IUE, ICAO: NIUE ), the only a paved runway operative in Niue, also called Hanan International Airport, with a runway of length 2335 m, mainly from the New Zealand Air New Zealand for the route used to Auckland. In 1995 he was removed to the departure of the Boeing 737 with maximum weight.
