The Red yellow foxtail ( Alopecurus aequalis ), also red-yellow foxtail, is a plant of the family Gramineae ( Poaceae ).

Features

The inflorescence is a 2-7 cm long and 3-5 mm wide Ährenrispe. It is rounded at both ends and cylindric - oblong. The spikelets are 2 to 2.2 (rarely 2.5 ) mm long. The glumes are herbaceous and fused only at the base. On the keel they are ciliated 0.5 mm long and the side faces short hair. The lemma is bald, puts her back at or slightly below the middle of an awn from 1.2 to 1.8 mm in length, which is much longer than the glume, straight and without knee. The anthers are from 0.8 to 1 mm long, at first white, later yellow-red, rust- colored or brick red, yellowish white at the end are ( unlike the similar kink foxtail ). Bloom time is from June to October. The flowers are usually pollinated and proterogyn.

The caryopsis is from 0.8 to 1 mm long, ovate and pointed.

Dissemination and locations

The Red yellow foxtail is in Europe, native to the temperate Asia and North America. It grows on the banks of ponds and lakes, in ditches and wet meadows. The species occurs mainly on temporarily flooded, nutrient-rich humus and clay soils. It is a full- light plant and a wetness indicator. Alopecurus aequalis rises up into the subalpine altitudinal zone, in Styria until 1860 m altitude.
