In the Gospel of Mark is mentioned that the publican Levi, who is usually identified with the disciple Matthew, a father named Alphaeus had (Mark 2:14 - Levi ben Chalfai ).

Father of James

In the disciple lists the Gospels and Acts a disciple named James is enumerated, which is dubbed to distinguish it from the more commonly mentioned Jesus disciples James Zebedee as " son of Alphaeus " ( Mt.10, 3 - Yes akov bar Chalfai; Mk 3.18; Lk.6, 15; Acts 1, 13).

Representations

Alphaeus, who was also identified in parts of the tradition ( the brother of Joseph of Nazareth? ) Cleophas, appears again and again in representations of the Holy Kinship, with Saint Anne, with his wife Mary Cleophas (John 19:25) and its four children. However, it could have been the father of James and Joses, and not the father of Simon, and Judas the sons of Cleophas. Then Alphaeus was not married to Mary Cleophas but with the "other Mary" (Mt 27:56, Mk 15:40), which was possibly a sister of St. Joseph. He is usually depicted teen with beard, the clothes usually depends on the fashion of the time.
