Alpine Club (UK)

The Alpine Club is the oldest climber association in the world with headquarters in London.

It was founded on 22 December 1857 by British mountaineers and was instrumental role in the development of mountaineering. First president of the club was John Ball, the first ascent of Mount Pelmo.

The Alpine Club has long been a men only club, mountaineers were not admitted as members. This led in 1907 to the founding of the Ladies' Alpine Club. Only in 1974 did the Alpine Club women as members.

The headquarters of the club is in a former Victorian department store in the Charlotte Road in London since 1991.

Note: Alpine Club is also the English name for Alpine Club or mountaineering club. The name has become a generic name.
