Als Sund
Geographical location
The Als Sound ( German: Flensburg Bay ) is a 20 km long strait in Northern Schleswig in southern Denmark. It connects the Aabenraa Fjord with the outer Flensburg Fjord and separates the island from the peninsula as Sundeved.
Location
The Als Sound begins in the north between the headland of Varnæs (German: Warnitz ) and the "nose" of the westernmost of Nordborg (German: Norburg ). The Sund runs in the northern part in NW- SE direction and is fairly consistent two kilometers wide. To the north lies the small bay Stexwig ( Stegsvig ). In the middle of the bay Sandvig bulges out to the east, to the southeast which is about 8 km long August Fjord runs (German: August Burger promotion ) towards August Borg (German: August Castle ) and Ulkebøl (German: Ulkebüll ). The actual Als Sound narrows at this point a few hundred meters and runs henceforth in north-south direction, until he at Sønderborg (German: Sonderburg ) opens in the Flensburg outer fjord.
Places
The most important place on Sund As is Sønderborg, whose castle formerly controlled the entrance to the Sound. The old town is like the castle on As, but Sønderborg has long extended to the western shore of the Sound, where the train station and the higher education institutions are among others. The only inner-city connection is still established in 1930, the bascule bridge Kong Christian X 's Bro via the Sound. The Alssundbroen is in the course of highway 8 and is located just north of the city.
North of the Sønderborg Arnkiel peninsula lies between Sund and August Borger fjord. Here the Prussian troops succeeded in the war of 1864 on June 29, the transition that brought the final decision.
Opposite Arnkiel is the traditional Good Sandberg in the parish Sottrup Sogn (German: Satrup ). Today, it is the venue owned by the University of Aarhus.
The only ferry across the sound, which is especially important for Nordborg: Between Ballebro in the parish Ullerup Sogn and Hardeshoi in the community Oksbøl Sogn ( Oxbüll dt ). A highway is being planned.
