Alservorstadt

The Alservorstadt is a district of Vienna, in the townships Alsergrund Josefstadt. The place was a separate municipality until 1850.

Geography

The Alservorstadt located in the south of the 9th municipality Alsergrund in the northeast of the 8th municipal district of Josefstadt. The Alserstraße forms the district boundary.

The river as is the namesake of the district and flows today as an underground stream channel through the Alservorstadt. In the north, bordering the Alservorstadt to the Thurygrund, on the east by the Roßau, to the south by the Inner City, Josefov and Breitenfeld and on the west by Waehring and Michelbeuern.

History

After the second Turkish siege of Vienna, in 1683, the Alservorstadt developed along the present Alserstraße in a previously sparsely populated area. End of the 17th century, living first in Spittelberg Croats, Slovaks and Slovenes were forced north Alserstraße to settle in the so-called Krowotendörfl. ( Mid-19th century many residents relocated due to rising land prices according to Favorites. ) 1753 was the Alser barracks opened, which was demolished in 1912. Culture and sights

One of the major attractions of the Alservorstadt is the neo-Gothic Votive Church, which was built from 1856 to 1879 after plans by Heinrich von Ferstel. The Classicist building of the Medico-Surgical Academy Josephinum the architect Isidore Canevale dates from the 18th century. Opposite is the Clam-Gallas Palace. From the Black Spaniard church only the front facade remains. Economy and infrastructure

Located on the ring road between the subway station Alserstraße on the belt and the metro Schotttentor that Alservorstadt is well connected to public transport. The district is home to the headquarters of the Austrian National Bank and the prison of Josefstadt and the municipal district office for the 8th district. Although the General Hospital (AKH) is now in Michelbeuern, but there are in the Alservorstadt still major health institutions such as the St. Anna Children's Hospital. In addition to the campus of the University of Vienna, which is housed on the site of the old General Hospital, is another major educational institutions located in the Alservorstadt, including the Lycée Français de Vienne and the development education house Afro -Asian Institute. The former municipal library main house of the book, which was built on the site of the Vienna City Theatre, now serves as headquarters of the music schools of the city of Vienna.
