Alte Münze

The Old Mint in Munich (possibly of Augsburg city foreman Bernhard Zwitzel ) built as stables and Kunstkammer building for Duke Albrecht V 1563-1567 by an unknown architect. The long term contemplated assignment of structure to Wilhelm Egckl has been revised by more recent research. 1808/ 09, the building was provided to plans by Johann Andreas Gärtner with an early classical facade and rebuilt in the following years Hauptmünzamt.

Location

The Old Mint was built in Munich's Old Town behind the northern city wall instead of medieval houses and is located in the Pfisterstraße between Marienhof and Platz.

Function

It served as stables and housed on the upper floors with the ducal Kunstkammer one of the first universal museums. Among the more than 6,000 objects in the collection is important paintings such as were The Battle of Issus by Albrecht Altdorfer, and natural history, ethnological and national historical exhibits, including the city of Jacob Sandtner models. According to their pillage by Swedish troops and their allies in 1632 led only to a shadow existence, but it was not until 1807/19 finally dissolved.

From 1809, the building served as a coin. Since 1986 located in the building, the Bavarian State Conservation Office. In July and August the Renaissance courtyard of the Old Mint of the Bavarian Theatre Academy for outdoor performances will be used annually.

Architecture

By a covered walk in the yard it is in the South with the former ducal residence, the old courtyard, connected. Originally, such a connection also to Neuveste in the north. In the courtyard of the Old Mint are located one above the other three arcades. This three-storey four-winged building still retains its original courtyard, which is equipped in all floors with arcades. Architecturally, the Court hereby ties to Italian Renaissance architecture to, but works because of the more compact proportions and the irregular spacing of the yokes less Italian and is thus an example of the style of the German Renaissance.

The Old Mint received their classical western façade 1808-1809 after a design by Johann Andreas Gärtner. The three female plaster statues in their gables Franz Jakob Schwanthalerstraße attributed to personalize and gold, silver and bronze as an allusion to the determination of the house. In the course of building the Maximilian street, the Old Mint in the years 1857-1863 to the north by the so-called " Direktorialgebäude " has been extended to plans by Friedrich Bürklein. Varia
