Alto of Altomünster

The Holy Alto ( † 760 ) was a hermit who worked in Bavaria in the area of ​​today's Altomuenster. According to tradition, he is said to have founded the monastery Altomuenster. His feast day is February 9.

As evidence of its existence is considered an undated deed of gift, on which the signature " Signum Altoni reclausi " (Latin for roughly, signature of Reklusen Alto ') can be found. In Freising Missal from the 10th century his feast is mentioned for the first time.

Hagiography

From the 11th century Life of Saint has been handed down, the Vita Sancti Altonis of St. Emmeraner Otloh monk who wrote this on behalf of the newly founded Benedictine abbey Altomuenster. Otloh emphasizes the fact that he stood no written documents.
