Aluísio Azevedo

Aluísio Azevedo, actually Aluísio Tancredo Gonçalves de Azevedo ( born April 14, 1857 in São Luís, Maranhão, † January 21, 1913 in Buenos Aires ) was a Brazilian diplomat, writer and artist.

Life

Azevedo was born into a wealthy family: his father was a Portuguese diplomat David Gonçalves de Azevedo, his mother Emília Amália Pinto de Magalhães came from one of the leading family of the country. The writer Artur Azevedo (1855-1908) was his older brother.

At nineteen Azevedo 1876 went to Rio de Janeiro to study at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes art. Upon successful completion, he was a cartoonist for magazines such as " O Figaro ", "A Semana Illustrada " or " Zig -Zag". When his father had died in 1878, Azevedo returned to São Luís and took care of the family. During this time he began to draw in favor of writing to neglect and was very successful 1880 debut as a writer.

When he returned to Rio de Janeiro, he was a well-known writer, although he never achieved the level of awareness of his brother. Between 1882 and 1895 he published almost nonstop.

Prudente de Morais During the presidency ' Azevedo represented his country at the court of King Alfonso XIII. (Madrid ) and Meiji Tenno (Tokyo). Later he was sent as a diplomat to the court of Victoria ( London) and President Roque Sáenz Peña to Buenos Aires. There Aluísio Azevedo died on 21 January 1913 at the age of 55 years.

Reception

Azevedo was arrested with " Uma Mulher de Lágrima ", his first novel, yet very Romanticism. But soon he found in naturalism a more appropriate basis for his work. With " O Mulato " in 1881 he created the first naturalistic novel of the Brazilian literary history. This book caused a scandal because the author is denouncing the preventive role of the church in the fight against racial discrimination.

Socio-politically active, Azevedo published many articles and pamphlets in which he fought for abolitionism. Many of his works written Azevedo alone; some, however, together with his colleague Émile Rouède or with his brother. Together with his brother he was one of the 40 founding members of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, held from 1897 to Cadeira No. 4
