Aluminumiodid is a chemical compound from the group of iodides.
Production and representation
Aluminumiodid can be obtained by reaction of aluminum with iodine.
Properties
Aluminumiodid is a white powder that consists of colorless flakes. It is moisture sensitive and decomposes when heated in air to form iodine and aluminum oxide. It exists as a dimer Al2I6.
Use
Aluminumiodid used in organic synthesis as a catalyst for breaking up certain types of C-O and N -O bonds. It cleaves aryl ethers and epoxides decomposed. It can also be used for the manufacture of iodinated organic compounds.
