Alvan Wentworth Chapman

Alvan Wentworth Chapman, Alvin Wentworth Chapman ( born September 28, 1809 in Southampton, Massachusetts, † April 6, 1899 in Apalachicola, Florida ) was an American physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Chapm. ".

Life and work

Chapman finished his education at Amherst College, Massachusetts, in 1830 as a graduate (BA ) from. In 1833 he took up medical studies. In 1835 he moved to Florida, where he moved to Apalachicola after stints in Quincy and Marianna 1847. He began to devote himself to botany. Chapman came into contact with Asa Gray and John Torrey, which he sent by him, among other plants collected for determination.

Honors

The plant genus Chapmannia Torr. et A. Gray from the legume family ( Fabaceae ) has been named after him. In the Apalachicola Chapman Elementary School and the Chapman Botanical Gardens are named in his honor.
