Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a New York-based modern dance company City, which was primarily known for her tours internationally. It was founded in 1958 by dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey. After his death in 1989 took over Judith Jamison and her deputy Masazumi Chaya as artistic director until July 1, 2011, when Robert Battle Jamison's successor. It consists of around 30 dancers nowadays.

History

Alvin Ailey and a group of young black modern dancers performed in March 1958 for the first time under the name of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater in New York's " Young Men's Hebrew Association " on. Then they began a European tour which is known as the railway tour today. 1960 Development Ailey probably his most famous piece Revelations. In 1962, the company was selected as part of President Kennedy's "President 's Special International Program for Cultural Presentations" and got a world tour in the Far East, Southeast Asia and Australia sponsored. In 1969, Ailey school and simultaneously moved the company to the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In 1971, had the AAADT their first appearance in the New York City Center. The following year, Judith Jamison's deputy Masazumi Chaya became a member.

On 1 December 1989 Ailey and Judith Jamison died took over the artistic direction of the company. This also attracted the Ailey organization over once more, on the Upper West Side, Manhattan. From then on, there was also a connection to the Ailey School and of the nearby Fordham College at Lincoln Center ( FCLC ), Fordham University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts ( BFA).

2004 moved the entire Ailey organization over once more, into the newly Joan Weill Center for Dance, which today still serves as home.

In 2010, Robert Battle was announced as the designated successor of Judith Jamison. He took over as artistic director as of 1 July 2011.

Performances and repertoire

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has occurred before an estimated 21 million people in 71 countries on all continents. Several times the company was also used as a cultural ambassador for America, a tradition that was started by Kennedy's tour. In 2002, both the Company and Judith Jamison awarded the National Medal of Arts.

Alvin Ailey created more than 79 dances for his company. Nevertheless, the dancers were not only a tool. The repertoire of the company today consists of more than 200 works by 70 other choreographers, such as Ulysses Dove, Karole Armitage, Uri Sands and recently Twyla Tharp (whose work The Golden Section was part of the Aufführungesrepertoires 2006 ). Some of Ailey's works are performed regularly, including Revelations, Night Creature and Cry.
