Alydus calcaratus

Krumm sensor bugs ( Alydidae ) are a family of bugs (Heteroptera ). They are found worldwide with about 250 species, of which 10 in Europe and in Central Europe, only the two species of the genus Alydus are located. Their main area of ​​distribution are the tropics and subtropics.

Features

The bugs reach a body length of 10 to 12 mm. They have narrow and elongated body and partly long and thin legs. They are usually colored gray-brown to black, the upper side of the abdomen but is orange-red. But this can be only in flight when the wings are open, see. The most striking features of this family are the slightly curved and slightly elongated last segments of the four-membered sensor and the legs ( femora of the hind legs, which have multiple, strong thorns. Their compound eyes appear very prominent spherical. Additionally, they also have simple eyes ( ocelli ). 's Head is wide, the tag ( scutellum ) is rather small. They are good fliers, since the front wing ( Hemielytren ) are usually well educated, but there are also species with shortened or missing front wings., the membranous part of the front wing is crossed by several long wires. the tarsi of the legs consist of three members.

The larvae look very similar to ants ( mimicry ) and living partly in their nests.

Way of life

The animals live on the coast, on sandy soils and nations, and feed mainly phytophagous of ripe as immature seeds whose juices they suck. However, some species also feed on other insects. Among the Krumm sensor bugs there are species which are known as pests in agriculture, such as those of the genus Leptocorisa, the damage to the fruit ( seeds) can cause rice plants. Krumm sensor bugs can secrete a fluid for defense.
