The Alzette ( Luxembourgish: Uelzecht; outdated High German name: Alzig or in Goethe: Elze ) is a 73 km long tributary of the Sauer in France and Luxembourg.
It originates in France near the town of Thil in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle, from there flows to the north and runs through the south of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg ( the Gutland ) from south to north. It flows including by Esch and Hesperingen in a spacious pool and through the capital city of Luxembourg in a narrow valley with the districts of reason and Pfaffenthal. The modern bridge over the river there is the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge.
North of the capital to Walferdingen ( Walfer, Walferdange ) and Luerenzweiler the valley a little wider, but its slopes is higher. In Mersch, where open out of the west, the Mamer and Eisch, it will close again. In Colmar-Berg also joins from the west, the Attert. About 3 km further on is the Alzette at Ettelbrück to the sour.
The Alzette is sung in the Luxembourg national anthem. Along the Alzette lead the long-distance cycle PC 1 and PC 15 as part of the National Cycling trails in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
