Amandla-Festival

The Amandla Festival was a world music festival, which was held in Cambridge in Boston ( Massachusetts) on July 21, 1979 at Harvard Stadium. The festival was a protest against the apartheid regime in South Africa and at the same time a benefit concert. The festival was attended by 30,000 spectators.

The word " Amandla " comes from the South African Zulu language and means " power ", " strength" or " power ". One of the headliners of the festival were Bob Marley & The Wailers. Marley gave controversial speeches during his performance at the failure of the western Babylon system and called for the unification of the African peoples. These speeches on the concert stage were unusual for Marley, as he normally threatened censorship when he spoke so openly about the inability of the system and smoking marijuana. Other musicians who appeared at the festival, were R & B-/Soul-Legende Patti LaBelle, jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri, drummer Babatunde Olatunji, the Nigerian, South African band Jabula and the comedian Dick Gregory, who also held a politically controversial speech before Marley's performance.
