Amara, Romania

Amara is a town in the district Ialomiţa in Romania.

Location

Amara is the Bărăgan - steppe, part of the Wallachian plain, on the northwest shore of the lake of the same steppe ( Lacul Amara ). The district capital Slobozia is about 8 km southeast of Amara away.

History

The region around Lake Amara was first mentioned at the time of the Wallachian prince Matei Basarab. At that time the lands were donated to the monastery in Slobozia. They arrived in 1864 by the secularization of monastery estates to the Romanian state. 1887 made ​​the first chemical analyzes of Amara Lake. Thereafter, a settlement developed on lake as a resort. Part of the spa facilities were destroyed during the First World War. After the Second World War, the cure was intensified and extended to the whole year. 2004 Amara was declared a city.

Population

1930 lived on the territory of today's about 2,600 people. As of the 2002 census lived in Amara 7,627 inhabitants, including 7,578 Romanians, 25 Roma and 10 Hungary.

Traffic

Amara has no rail connection. There are regular bus services to Slobozia.
