Amareleja is a Vila ( town ) and a municipality in Portugal, in the district of Freguesia Moura, with 108.5 km ² area and a population of 2566 (as at 30 June 2011). This gives a population density of 23.6 inhabitants per km ².

Amareleja is located in the vicinity of the reservoir of alqueva, the Rio Ardila and the Castelo from Noudar. The focus is on agriculture, with vineyards, cheese and breed of black pigs. In the municipality of Amarelja is the largest solar power plant in Portugal.

History

In the municipality of Amareleja there are many prehistoric cultural sites ( Antas ) due to the Celtic period.

On April 1, 1695 the place of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Mareleja called for the first time in a document. The clock tower of Amareleja goes back under construction on the 1793. In the Valley of Valtamujo there are remains of a Roman bridge and other radicals on the banks of the Rio Ardila.

On August 16, 1991 Amareleja ( small town ) was raised to Vila.

Economy

End of 2008, the largest solar power plant (central photo voltaica ) Europe was opened in Amareleja with 46 MWp. In the year 93 million kWh per year are produced here.
