Ambroise Thomas

Ambroise Thomas (* August 5, 1811 in Metz, † February 12, 1896 in Paris) was a French composer.

Life

Thomas 1828 Student of the Paris Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Victor Dourlen, Pierre Zimmermann and Jean -François Lesueur. He won in 1832 the Prix de Rome with the cantata Hermann and Ketty and spent three years in Italy on. After that, he lived as an opera composer in Paris. Since 1871 he was director of the Conservatory.

In addition to nineteen operas, whose successful Hamlet and Mignon were, Thomas composed a ballet, two cantatas, a requiem, chamber music, motets, canzoni, and male voices.
