Ambrose Akinmusire

Ambrose Akinmusire ( born May 1, 1982 in Oakland ) is an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer.

Life and work

Akinmusire has Nigerian parents and grew up in North Oakland. Early mentors were the trumpeter Robert Porter and pianist Ed Kelly. After visiting the Berkeley High School, he received a scholarship to study at the Manhattan School of Music and Others at Dick Oatts and Lew Soloff. A conveyor at this stage was Steve Coleman, Five Elements which he belonged ( Resistance Is Futile, 2001). He then studied at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at Terence Blanchard and Billy Childs, where he worked among others with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and in the postgraduate program at the University of Southern California.

In 2007 he won the Thelonious Monk Competition and the Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Solo Competition; he took in the same year with Alan Pasqua and put a first album ( Prelude: to Cora ) before at Fresh Sound / New Artists. In 2008, he joined with Vijay Iyer from the Chicago Jazz Festival and has participated in Esperanza Spalding album Esperenza with. 2011 followed the Blue Note album Heart Emerges Glistening When the, which, inter alia, contains the poem set to music by him Tear Suicide Manifesto. In addition to his regular quintet worked with the pianist Jason Moran, who acted as co- producer. The Downbeat recorded the album with four stars and praised: " Clearly, something special and personal is at work here, a vision of jazz did is bigger than camps, Broader and more intellectually restless than blowing sessions. ". On a European tour, the quintet showed, among other things, a remarkable concert at Ronnie Scott 's Jazz Club.

In June 2011 Akinmusire was twice awarded the Jazz Awards Jazz Journalists Association, both as a promising talent as well as the best trumpet player of the year. He was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros end of 2011. In 2012 he won the Kritikerpoll downbeat as the best trumpet player; 2014 he presents the album The Imagined Savior is the Easier to Paint in Blue Note.
