Ambrosini Sagittario

The Ambrosini Sagittario was driven by jet engines interceptors of the Italian aircraft manufacturer SAI Ambrosini. It was developed on the basis of Super Ambrosini S-7, a piston engine trainer aircraft, with Ambrosini in the early fifties. As drive the French light turbine Turboméca Marboré II was initially provided. Known as the Sagittario machine was the first Italian design by 45 ° swept wings.

History

After extensive tests, initially with an Alfa Romeo piston engine in the nose, as the prototype jet fighter was launched on January 5, 1953 for its first flight. Since resistance problems arose with the hull constructed in timber, an all-metal semi- monocoque was developed and for this also provided the more powerful engine, the Rolls -Royce Derwent; just received the machine now a tricycle landing gear and an ejection seat. The pattern was so improved after its completion as saggittario II in the testing.

Despite extensive advertising sales to foreign customers were neither interested nor the Italian Air Force for this type. After the reorganization of the company as Aerfer the pattern with additional rocket engine was again offered as Aerfer Ariete, but could not prevail, so that the program was eventually discontinued. On the basis of the prototype Sagitario Aerfer Sagittario II was developed later.
