Amédée Courbet

Amedee Anatole Courbet Prosper ( born June 26, 1827 in Abbeville, Somme, † June 11, 1885 on the Pescadoresinseln before Makung ) was a French admiral.

Courbet visited the École polytechnique and entered 1849 in the French naval service. It was founded in 1856 ship lieutenant commander in 1866, captain in 1873, 1880 and 1884 Vice Admiral Admiral.

Courbet managed 1880-1882 the penal colony in New Caledonia and was placed at the head of the fleet department on May 31, 1883 the coasts of Tonkin. There he took over after he had conquered between the 16th and 19th August, the forts on the river Hué and Annam subject entirely to the French rule, the command of the land forces standing in Tonkin, who were in a very awkward situation. In November, he received an additional charge of the administration. Between the 14th and 17th December, he hit the black flags and took their fortified position at Sơn Tây. He planned an attack on the Chinese troops stationed at Bắc Ninh, but he was removed in February 1884 by the supreme command and limited to the naval forces.

Courbet thus received the command of the " Fleet of the extreme Orient ", the possessed man landing troops over thirty ships and several thousand. On August 5, he occupied Keelung on Formosa, blocked this island and destroyed between 24 and 28 August the arsenal of Fuzhou and situated within this Chinese ships. Then he led the battles on Formosa and went in February 1885 against a Chinese squadron dispatched to the relief, chased it and occupied on 29 March, the Pescadores Islands, whose works he destroyed. Although he was not able to block the Chinese coast, but prevented by his cruiser and the occupation of one of the Bay of Petschili (now the Bohai Bay ) located Miautau Islands, the rice supplies in the northern provinces. With these measures, he made the Chinese government ready for peace deal, even though they had the French inflicted a defeat in Tonkin and expect more success there. On April 15, Courbet ordered the lifting of the blockade of Formosa.

Courbet died aboard the battleship Bayard before Makung ( Pescadoresinseln ). He was taken to France and buried in Abbeville at government expense.
