America the Beautiful
America the Beautiful ( America the Beautiful ) is an American patriotic song. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates. The music was composed by Samuel A. Ward, the church organist and choirmaster. Originally, the song was written as a poem, which was published for the first time in the church magazine "The Congregationalist " in the issue of July 4, 1895. In the first publication of the poem still bears the name "America" was wearing. Only after the merger of Bates poem with music by Ward, the song was first published under the title of "America the Beautiful " 1910. The song is one of the most popular patriotic songs of the United States of America and is considered next to God Bless America as an unofficial national anthem instead of the official " The Star- Spangled Banner ".
History
1893 traveled the then 33 -year-old English professor Katherine Lee Bates to Colorado Springs to teach there for a summer at the Colorado College. During her journey, she was inspired by many sights, which they processed later in her poem. One of these attractions was, for example, the " White City " at the " World's Columbian Exposition " (which, held in Chicago from May 1 to October 30, 1893 World's Fair ), which was a symbol of civilization and urban planning policy and the direct opposite of various slums represented.
Two years later, the poem in celebration of Independence Day of the newspaper "The Congregationalist " was released.
The melody of Ward was born in 1882, when he on a ferry from Coney Iceland back to New York City went where he lived. The music composed by him anthem is called " Materna " and was not originally composed for the poem. Ward died in 1903 in Newark, and could not live to see the publication of " America The Beautiful ".
There were several attempts to confirm or even to completely replace the anthem this song either next to " The Star- Spangled Banner " as the second official National Anthem. However, these efforts were far without success. After the attacks of 11 September 2001, the popularity of this song has risen again. So this unofficial anthem for example, in various sporting events played alongside the official. 2014 was shown during the Super Bowl a Coca -Cola advertisement, singing in the people of different mother tongues, including a woman with a headscarf, the text of America the Beautiful. This triggered in the United States a shitstorm right of Americans who were outraged that the song will not be sung in English. There were calls for a boycott. Conservative opinion makers such as Allen West, Glenn Beck and Laura Ingraham were outraged.
