American ethnicity

In the U.S. Census in 2000 reported 7.2 % of the population, they were American descent ( american ancestry ). With this self-designation is not an Indian descent meant that was listed as a separate item in the questionnaire, but relate these U.S. citizens their origin mostly on the American colonists, so the first European Americans, emigrants from the British Isles were a majority. The majority is thus actually classified under the Irish- Americans or English Stubby. Another common motivation is the lack of knowledge about their own ancestry.

Pay

As in the questionnaire of the Census 2010 was only asked for the race and not discussed in greater detail the origin, are no more recent data than that of 2000. The number of " American -Russians " came in 2000, according to the Census to 20.2 million U.S. residents. In comparison to Census 1990, this number has almost doubled. This makes them the fifth largest group within the population of the United States.

Geographical priorities

The American -born population is concentrated mainly on the southern, most notably on the states of Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia. In these states, the group with around 20 % of the population, the relative majority.

Background

The mentioned countries were colonized relatively early by Europeans. This is one reason why the population defined as "American" ancestry, as opposed to residents of other states that were colonized later. There is also a greater emotional proximity to the country of origin of the ancestors is present, due to the fact that the immigration of the ancestors back is shorter in time.

It is noticeable also that the " American -born " population mainly lives in the southern states, a part of the country is widely seen as more conservative. So also possibly be nationalist- patriotic motives in question.
