Building

Claverton Manor was originally built in 1580 and was in the midst of an artfully landscaped gardens, close to a church. From this original building, which was demolished in 1820, the terraces are still preserved with slight walls and gate posts. At the same place John Vivian left an estate of Bath stone, built according to plans by Sir Jeffry Wyatvilles. The building stands as a Grade I building under monument protection since February 1, 1956.

Garden

The garden, originally built in the style of the 19th century, was redesigned after the acquisition of the property by the American Museum in Britain in 1961, in the American style. Right next to the house is a collection of medicinal and culinary herbs from the colonial era. There is a stock of North American trees. At the foot of the terrace walls are a mixed border, which was designed by the American landscape architect Lanning. Also a copy of the garden of George Washington was built on Mount Vernon.
