American Schools of Oriental Research

The American Schools of Oriental Research (short: ASOR ) is an American non-profit organization based in Boston, which since its founding in 1900, promoting the exploration of the ancient Near East.

It was established under the leadership of the Archaeological Institute of America, the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Oriental Society in life, were among its founding members, Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, Columbia University, Boston University, Johns Hopkins University, and the Andover Theological Seminary, Episcopal Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, the New York Union Theological Seminary and the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati.

The union maintained since 1900 under the name American School of Oriental Research, a scientific institute in Jerusalem since 1970 WF Albright Institute of Archaeological Research ( AIAR ). 1925, a new building was erected for this. Other related research institutions are the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman ( ACOR ) and the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute ( CAARI ) in Nicosia.

Today the ASOR has 1315 private members, 95 institutional members and three research institutes as cooperating members. It publishes the magazines Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research ( BASOR ), Journal of Cuneiform Studies ( JCS ), and Near Eastern Archaeology (NEA ) and the serials ASOR Annual ( AASOR ) and ASOR Archaeological Report Series ( ASOR -ARS ). They also organized a conference annually.

The current President is Timothy Harrison.
