Amit Chaudhuri

Amit Chaudhuri ( Bengali: অমিত চৌধুরী, Amit Caudhurī; * 1962 in Kolkata, West Bengal ) is an Indian writer and musician. He writes in English and has been awarded several international prizes.

Life

Chaudhuri was born in 1962 in Kolkata and grew up in Mumbai. He studied English at University College London and obtained his doctorate with a thesis on DH Lawrence at Balliol College, Oxford. Between 1992 and 1999, he held teaching positions at Oxford and Cambridge, and lived in that time between India and England. He gave lectures on English literature at various British and American universities and worked as literary critic for major newspapers. His first novel, A Strange and Sublime Address he had published in 1991. Chaudhuri 1999 returned back to Calcutta, where he has lived ever since. In 2002 he was a visiting professor at Columbia University, in 2005 at the Free University of Berlin. Chaudhuri is married and has one daughter.
