Ammocharis tinneana, Serengeti

Ammocharis is a plant genus of the family of the Amaryllis family ( Amaryllidaceae ). The only six species are native to Africa.

Features

Ammocharis are bulbous plants, the bulbs are great. The often double-spaced and slightly fan-shaped leaves are sickle-shaped and blunt at the extremity. They are persistent, dry during times of drought, however, back in part. A midrib is missing.

The inflorescences are many flowered and have two adult non bracts on. The flowers are long -stalked. The corolla tube is long and narrow and longer to slightly shorter than the linealischen, spreading and recurved Kronblattabschnitte. The stamens are non- grow. The filaments are filiform. The scars are undivided.

The draft tube ovary has in each compartment at four to thirty ovules. The nearly round to obtuse beaked, fleshy fruit capsule opens and irregular. The seeds are fleshy, nearly round and light green.

The chromosome number is 2n = 22

Dissemination

The genus Ammocharis is native to sub-Saharan Africa. Their range extends north by Sudan and Ethiopia to South Africa in the south.

System

The genus was first described in 1821 by Ammocharis William Herbert. Type species is the - originally described by Linnaeus as Amaryllis Art - Ammocharis longifolia. The genus name Ammocharis means as much as "Sand grace " (Greek ammo for " sand," Charis for "Grace, Joy" ).

The genus belongs to the subtribe Ammocharis Crininae from the tribe Amaryllideae in the subfamily Amaryllidoideae within the family of Amaryllidaceae. It is thus closely related to the two genera hook lilies ( Crinum ) and with Cybistetes. Previously, she was also classified in the family Liliaceae.

The genus includes about Ammocharis six types:

  • Ammocharis coranica ( Ker Gawl. ) Herb.

  • Ammocharis tinneana ( Kotschy & Peyr. ) Milne - Redh. & Schweick.
