Amsterdam Oost

Amsterdam Oost (Amsterdam East) is a municipality in the municipality of Amsterdam, North Holland province, with a population of over 112,000 on an area of 31 km ² (January 2010)

History

By 1921 Watergraafsmeer was a separate municipality, but was later assigned to the municipality of Amsterdam, and was from 1987 officially a district of Amsterdam. East in 1990 officially recognized as a district. 1998, the two districts were merged under the name " Oost -Watergraafsmeer " as neighborhoods. Since 2010 Amsterdam Oost is a municipality and Watergraafsmeer a residential area of the district, also Zeeburg and IJburg were assigned as the District Neighborhood East.

The "International Institute of Women's History " had until October 2011 based at Obiplein in the former Gerard Majella Church.

District

In Watergraafsmeer (also called " Oost -Watergraafsmeer " ), the residential area Weesperzijde, on the eastern banks of the river. 1629 the lake Watergraafsmeer was drained and was the most important connection after Weesp place for a long time. The Oosterparkbuurt is limited by the Wibautstraat, Linnaeusstraat, Mauritskade and the railway line Amsterdam - Utrecht. The district was created end of the 19th century. Amsteldorp was created in 1948 near the railway station Amstel Station. The Dapperbuurt was named after the Dutch physician and historian Olfert Dapper ( 1636-1689 ). The Transvaalbuurt counts about 10,000 inhabitants ( as of 2012) on 38 acres of floor space. The name " Transvaalbuurt " was named after the former colony Transvaal in South Africa. Betondorp (concrete village) was built 1923-1925 as an experiment. There were possibilities investigated houses with lots of concrete and fewer bricks to build. In that era of construction bricks were expensive and urgent after the First World War were missing low-cost housing for the public living beings ( " Volkshuisvesting "). Built in 1950 to 1954 settlement Jeruzalem in the garden city Frankendael one of the 100 most important Dutch monuments ( Rijksmonument ) the postwar period.

In Amsterdam Oost is also the Dapper multicultural atmosphere, similar to the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp. The market is located in a shopping street, with around 240 stalls. Parks

The Oosterpark was in 1886 a green area, fenced by trees and scrub, then in 1891 the park was created. Today, the Oosterparkfestival is annually held on May 5 and June the festival for "world music" ( Wereldmuziek ), part of the " Amsterdam Roots Festival ".

Following the example of London's Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park was founded on 5 May 2005 in Oosterpark the " Spreeksteen " where every Sunday afternoon visitors can give lectures. Right next to IJburg is the Diemerpark, twice as large as the Vondelpark. A natural and recreational area ( Recreatiegebied ) with a play area for children, a sports facility and an outdoor stage. In the middle there is a large pond.

Trivia

The " Containerdorp " ( container village ) on Wenckebachweg consists of about 1000 containers in which students live. It is the largest " container village " in Europe and was created as a plight as many students find on the open market any rooms or apartments to rent.
