Anabasis (plant)

Anabasis articulata, fruiting

Anabasis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Amaranthaceae ( Amaranthaceae ).

Description

Anabasis species are annual or perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs. The fleshy stems are clearly divided, its surface is mostly bare except for tufts of hair at the nodes, rarely pubescent with trichomes papillenartigen or woolly. The leaves are opposite, they can be reduced to scales or significantly developed.

The inflorescences are extended or compressed ears. The hermaphrodite flowers are sunk in the axils of the bracts, with two side Down (Roll Brakteolen ) individually or in groups of up to four. The perianth consists of five slightly uneven broad, membranous tepals. There are three to five stamens present, bear no appendages. Staminodes can be located between the stamens. The ovary is vertical with two or three short, thick scars. The ripe fruit can be like berries or dry, it is either upright and compressed or almost spherical. The seed is vertical and is approximately lenticular. It is completed by the embryo spiral, a nutritive tissue is missing.

For fruit time usually form on the back of some or all tepals membranous, slightly uneven broad wings. Rarely, the tepals remain wingless. Fruit ripening is very late, usually in November.

Distribution and habitat

The genus Anabasis is of southwest Europe and North Africa on the Red Sea coast (Ethiopia ) spread to Southwest and Central Asia. Asia is the region with the greatest morphological variation. The species grow in steppes and semi-deserts.
