Analog telephone adapter

An analog telephone adapter ( ATA) is a device that connects through the Voice-over -IP network with one or more standard analog telephones. Usually it is a small box with an Ethernet port ( for Internet access ) and one or more telephone lines. This allows it to continue to use existing analog phones for Voice over IP. The advantage of this solution is that you can make calls even when the PC.

The distribution of analog telephone adapters is decreasing:

  • On the one hand grab many users, instead of an ATA to buy, rather to a DSL modem with integrated VoIP router. A well-known example are the various types of Box Fon of AVM.
  • On the other hand phone new connections are offered by phone providers often only as a Next Generation Network ( NGN), in which you get asked no conventional DSL modem from the provider, but a so-called Integrated Access Device ( IAD), over the phone calls via Voice IP expire.

A frequent area for ATAs is the connection of traditional fax machines to VoIP systems, since VoIP fax machines are expensive in comparison and many users' existing fax and multifunctional devices not want to take out of service prematurely. Usually in this case is the transfer of T.38 fax information after the procedure.
