Anathallis

Anathallis rubens

The genus Anathallis the orchid family (Orchidaceae) comprises about 100 species of plants, all of which occur in South and Central America. The small plants grow mainly epiphytic.

Description

The species of this genus form of a creeping rhizome erect, slender, from one to three differ -ended low- sheets wrapped shoots. The shoots can be close together or separated by a long rhizome. Each drive carries a leaf, this is oval to lanceolate, covered with two to three celled hairs. The leathery leaf is connected by a petiole to the engine; a tissue separator is located in the leaf stalk, so that a rest of the petiole ( the annulus ) remains on the drive when the sheet falls.

The racemose, sometimes bloom inflorescence appears terminal, often from a small spathe. The sepals of resupinierten flowers are oval to lanceolate, acuminate to long drawn out, often hairy on the inside or papillose. The lateral sepals may be free or fused together. The lateral petals are smaller than the sepals, sometimes filiform. The lip is oval and rounded. At the base is narrowed and grown over a foot of the column. The column is winged and vaulted to the top of the stamen with a cap ( Klinandrium ). The stamen sits at the end of the column is bent down towards the column axis and contains two pollinia.

In Anathallis sclerophylla variety of insects were observed as flower visitors (Drosophila, wasps, fungus flies ( Sciaridae ) and beetles), without was found that if these pollination is effected.

Dissemination

The species of the genus Anathallis come from southern Mexico and the Caribbean south through Central America, the northern half of South America to Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina before. They grow there as epiphytes in humid forests at altitudes 200-2700 m. Rarely occur and terrestrial species.

System

The genus Anathallis was in 1877 by João Barbosa Rodrigues established, but long time not used because the species related to the genus Pleurothallis were counted. Due to genetic studies, the species from the subgenus Specklinia, Section Muscosae and the subgenus Acuminatia were spun off from the genus Pleurothallis and summarized under the existing name Anathallis. The closest relatives are the genera Frondaria, Lepanthes, Trichosalpinx and Zootrophion. Related genera are found in the subtribe Pleurothallidinae.
