Anatoly Sagalevich

Anatoly Mikhailovich Sagalevitch (Russian Анатолий Михайлович Сагалевич; born September 5, 1938 in Chernihiv, Ukrainian SSR ) is a Russian submarine engineer and oceanographer.

Sagalevitch working since 1965 at the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and since 1979 director of the submarine program. Since 1985, he has the title of Doctor of Science. He helped in the construction of submarines Pisces Pisces VIII and IX and the two Mir submarines. As chief pilot of the Mir, he made over 300 dives and led 28 expeditions, including the wreck of the Titanic, Bismarck, K -278 Komsomolets and K -141 Kursk.1990 he led an expedition to the bottom of Lake Baikal. In James Cameron's films Titanic and Ghosts of the Abyss, he was seen as Mir- pilot. In 2007 he was Mir- pilot of the expedition Arktika 2007, the Russian flag was placed on the seabed at the geographic North Pole. In 2008 he was appointed Hero of the Russian Federation.
