Anatoly Vlasov

Anatoly Alexandrovich Vlasov (Russian Анатолий Александрович Власов, Anatoly Alexandrovich Vlasov English transcription; * 7 Augustjul / August 20 1908greg in Balashov, .. † December 22, 1975 in Moscow) was a Russian physicist.

Vlasov studied from 1927 to 1931 at the Moscow State University, where he remained for the rest of his career and in 1944 was awarded a full professorship. He was a student of Igor Tamm. 1945-1953 he was there Head of the Department of Theoretical Physics.

It dealt among other things with optics, physics of crystals, statistical physics and plasma physics. In plasma physics, the Vlasov equation is named after him, a microscopic equation of motion for the distribution functions of electrons and ions, which takes the place of the Boltzmann equation in the gas kinetics there, which is not applicable because of the long-range Coulomb forces.

In 1970 he was awarded the Lenin Prize.
