Andimba Toivo ya Toivo

Herman Toivo ya Toivo Andimba ( born August 22, 1924 in Omangundu, Oshikoto, North Central Namibia) is a Namibian human and civil rights. He was co-founder and chairman of the party of SWAPO. Through his conscious protest against the apartheid policy of South Africa, he became a symbol of the freedom fighters for an independent Namibia.

Life

Herman Toivo ya Toivo 's father worked for the Protestant Church in his region and he completed a teacher training, after which he held until 1952 worked as a teacher in 1942.

During the 50 years Toivo ya Toivo lived in Cape Town and became increasingly involved in the anti-apartheid policy which is why he was referred back to his homeland in 1957. Because of the inhumane treatment of black African mining workers gained Toivo ya Toivo 1958 a human rights petition to the United Nations and founded the same year the first (illegal ) Namibian opposition party: the Ovamboland People's Organization ( OPO), out of which 1960 he ( along with his party colleague Sam Nujoma ) SWAPO founded.

On political pressure Nujoma left the country and led a government in exile; Herman Toivo ya Toivo was sentenced in 1968 after a trial in accordance with the South African " Terrorism Act No. 83 of 1967 " 20 years imprisonment on Robben Iceland. His counsel was Joel Carlson. In 1984 his release from prison (after petition by Dirk Mudge ).

After the victory of SWAPO government and Toivo ya Toivo Namibia's independence in 1990 Minister of Mines and Energy and the following year, Secretary-General of the party. Toivo ya Toivo, 2002, the Department of Prisons and correctional, which he stood up to 2005.

Toivo ya Toivo, 2005, moved from political life back in Namibia. He has since worked in the private sector.
