Andja ( German Addinal ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Sõmeru ( Sõmeru vald ) in the Estonian Lääne -Virumaa.

Location and description

Andja than twelve kilometers northwest of Rakvere. The village has 23 inhabitants ( 2005).

The settlement was first mentioned in 1241 in records under the name Adnæias. For 1406, the Court and the village Adnyel are occupied. 1489 the village in Hofland had risen. In the Middle Ages the farm was like a fortress built in the style of a castle vassals, and surrounded by a high limestone wall.

Good Andja

From 1406 until the end of the 17th century the manor was owned by the noble Baltic German family Wrangel (also Wrangell ). Last owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform of 1919 was Julie Baroness Ungern- Sternberg.

The property was built in its later form mainly in the 1770s on the important road between Rakvere and Kunda. The baroque main house with his coat chimney was burning already from 1780 and was only partially restored. The historic buildings of the estate have fallen for the most part today.

Attractions

Worth the fifteen meter long stone bridge over the river Toolse ( Toolse Jõgi ), which was at the turn of the 18th to 19th century built is .. 1804 Windmill Andja originated in the Dutch style. The upper part of the mill is no longer maintained.
