André Antoine
André Antoine ( born January 31, 1858 in Limoges, . † October 19, 1943 in Le Pouliguen, Dep Loire -Atlantique ) was a French stage director.
Life
Antoine founded in 1887 in Paris, the Théâtre Libre. He founded the private theater club with the help of Émile Zola, socially critical in closed meetings members pieces of Zola, Henrik Ibsen, Gerhart Hauptmann, inter alia, the censors to stage over. Antoine was preparing with his work naturalism the way and was so revolutionary effect on the French theater. After the closure of the theater due to financial problems André Antoine worked as a theater critic. From 1917 to 1922 he was director of several films, including the influential Zola adaptation La Terre ( 1921).
