André Bloch (composer)

André Bloch ( born January 14, 1873 in Wissembourg; † August 7, 1960 in Paris) was a French composer.

Bloch studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Ernest Guiraud and Jules Massenet. In 1893, he won with the cantata Antigone on a text by Ferdinand Beissier the first Premier Grand Prix de Rome.

After connected to the price stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, he taught from 1898 harmony at the Conservatoire de Paris, where his most important pupil Jehan Alain was. Later he also taught at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. Among his private pupils was the composer Fernand Oubradous.

Bloch was primarily known as an opera composer. His first opera premiered Maïda in 1909, his last, in 1939 created the comic opera Guignol was premiered in 1949 at the Opéra -Comique. For a performance of Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann unfinished Bloch created a part of the instrumentation. He also composed symphonic works and ballets, chamber music, piano works and songs.
