Brink translated the novel into English and then published it abroad. Since then, he writes his novels - with one exception - both in Afrikaans and English, so that they usually appear in two languages simultaneously. In 1980 he was awarded a professorship for Afrikaans literature at Rhodes University. The ban on Kennis van the Aand was repealed in 1982.
