André Néron

André Néron ( born November 30, 1922 in La Clayette, Saône -et -Loire, † April 6, 1985 in Paris) was a French mathematician who worked on algebraic geometry and number theory.

Néron attended the Ecole Normale Superieure from 1943 and a doctorate in Paris in 1951 at Albert Châtelet ( arithmétique Problèmes et géométriques rattachés à la notion de rang d'une courbe algébrique dans un corps). 1959/60 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study. Later he was a professor at the University of Paris-Sud ( Univ. Paris XI) in Orsay and at the University of Poitiers. He died of cancer.

Néron (the generalization of elliptic curves ) over a local field K is known for its named after him " Néron model" ( minimal model ) of an elliptic curve or abelian variety. According to him, the Néron - Tate height rational points of abelian varieties is named and the Néron - Severi group.

In 1954 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM ) in Amsterdam ( Valeur du nombre asymptotique of points de hauteur sur une bornée courbe elliptique ) and 1966 on the Moscow ( Degré d' intersection en géométrie diophantienne ). In 1983 he received the Émile Picard Medal of the Académie des sciences in 1970 and the Prix Servant.

His doctoral counts the number theorist Jean -Louis Colliot - Thélène. He had only one other graduate students, Gérard Ligozat.
